Meet the Melbourne HR Team

david Simpson + the founding of Melbourne hr

David Simpson , Managing-Director

David Simpson, Managing-Director

Melbourne HR's Managing Director, David Simpson, has well over a decade of experience in HR Management and Leadership. During this time he has worked in a variety of environments, including the Defence Force, Corporate entities, and Start-ups.

Through this experience David could see a need for better practice HR advice and outsourcing in the small and medium business bracket, and established Melbourne HR to specifically support that market.

He drew on many experiences in his working life, including both the failures and the successes of the many organisations that he was involved in. Here are two examples of those experiences, which lead to the formation of Melbourne HR.

As a Lieutenant in the Royal Australian Navy David was the most senior seagoing Operations Officer at the Darwin Fleet Base, and was tasked with auditing a range of under-performing crews. The audit showed that a large proportion of crew problems stemmed from poor HR processes - poor morale, poor training management, poor people management. To change this he built custom training programs for each crew, developed better and simplified communication processes between departments, delivered HR 'quick wins' before overhauling their management to erase negative culture and established a positive standing benchmark. Not only was David recommended for early promotion, but his training programs were standardised and are still in use today as the training templates for Patrol Boats.

In 2013/14, during his tenure as the Operations Manager of TalentBox, David consulted to companies on the take up and installation of their technology platform. Clients included a major supermarket chain as well as many small and medium enterprises (SMEs). It was apparent that a number of these companies employed either under-skilled hires or relegated HR to an ancillary function of another employee's portfolio of tasks. These under-skilled or under-focussed employees had a clear negative effect on the bottom line, through poor morale, personnel development, hiring practices and retention. However, these companies had a personal and agile approach to HR that was very effective if used correctly.

There was a clear disparity between the sophisticated systems of the larger businesses and the fast and personal nature of SME HR. Melbourne HR was founded to inject sophistication into SME people management, giving them a competitive edge.

The SME market deserves best practice HR delivered efficiently and cost-effectively – that’s the Melbourne HR difference.
